Your Favorite Things (don’t need to be everyone else’s favorite things)

January 11, 2017

It’s easy to get obsessed with Pottery Barn and Restoration Hardware catalogs, but the best way to decorate your home ISN’T to decorate it like anyone else’s. I’ve seen it time and time again, people getting completely paralyzed in making decisions about pillows or curtains. It’s really not that hard, pick the one you like. Maybe you really want that oil painting of a whale shark. Buy it! You will likely always have joy when you see it.

Also, consider how you dress. Usually if you wear bright colors you should dress your house the same way. Put together your room like you’d put together an outfit. Dark wash jeans with a canary yellow shirt looks great, just like a navy couch with yellow accent pillow does. Here are a few of my favorite things (anyone else thinking Julie Andrews right now?).

For some reason, even when everyone else was way over brass, I was all about it. Check out my brass duck at the top of this post. My parents had a brass duck on a shelf when I was growing up and when I saw this at the Antique Mall here in Bloomington I couldn’t pass it up. I never regret that purchase.

These weird Royal Doulton mugs are too cool to pack up and stash in the basement. These were a hand me down from my grandmother and were made in the 50’s in England.  These two characters are named “The Cardinal” and “’Arry”. I bet you can tell which is which

This cute stash man is a creation from the very talented Katie Vernon, a very good friend of mine. I move this guy around the house so he can keep an eye on things. People find it most unsettling when I have him posted up on the bathroom bookshelf. Check out Katie Vernon at

Finally, I love having greenery in the house. This little African violet is my smallest of plants but I have a variety of plants in every corner and on every shelf. Especially in the winter those plants lighten the mood and make it warmer in my home. Don’t forget that having plants in the home can also be a great way to purify your air!

Don’t over think it. If you like an orange ceramic vase, buy it. If you have an old painting you’ve always loved but you weren’t sure where it would go, just pop it up. When you first place accents in a room it takes a few weeks to get used to it. Give it a month before you decide to relocate it.

I’d love to see pics of all your favorite things. Post it up on Insta @andrealutzhomes.
